Thursday Morning Superhero: Halloween ComicFest Edition

This Saturday marks the return of Halloween ComicFest! Participating comic book stores will be handing out free comics and more!  It is the perfect time to test out your Halloween costume and pick up some free comics to boot.  My family has a tradition of ordering the comics ahead of time to hand out to trick-or-treaters.  Here are the five books that I hope to pick up on Saturday with my kids.

The Adventures of Cthulhu Jr. and Dastardly Dirk - Dastardly Dick is hoping to attain supervillain status and is trying to prove himself and climb the ranks. He is tasked with capturing the son of Cthulhu and it doesn't quite go as planned. I tend to jump at any opportunity to share a Cthulhu book with my kids.

Star Wars Age of Rebellion: Boba Fett #1 - While it isn't a halloween book (sorry), I did pick up my Rise of Skywalker tickets this week and have Star Wars on the brain. I don't often decline the opportunity to learn more about everyone's favorite bounty hunter and this book is no exception.

Just Beyond - If your house is similar to mine your kids have busted out the R.L. Stine books for some kid friendly scares. This book is about some kids who encounter aliens on a family camping trip.  Apparently there is something out there in the woods!

House of Fear: Attack of the Killer Snowmen - This is touted as a fun and spooky adventure for kids
of all ages, but you had me at killer snowmen.  I am always down for a holiday crossover and don't mind a bit of Christmas mixed with my Halloween.

DCeased #1 - A pandemic has hit earth that is turning everyone into ultra violent zombie type creatures.  The cover evokes Walking Dead crossover (with faster zombies) and I am on board for some zombie fun at Halloween.

Thursday Morning Superhero: Halloween ComicFest Edition

This Saturday marks the return of Halloween ComicFest!  Participating stores will be giving out free comics and typically have other fun activities that are delightfully bewitching. In addition to the comics, stores will also have some exclusive collectibles for sale.

The item on the top of my list is the Funko Pop! of Star-Lord.  This look is based on the Guardians of the Galaxy comic from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.  In addition to the Pop!, stores will have limited numbers of exclusive Deadpool merchandise, including a lovely version of the Merc with the Mouth dressed in a lovely pink dress.  Check out all of the exclusives here.  In keeping with my annual tradition here at Nerds of a Feather, my top five comics are the following.  In no particular order.

Johnny Boo and the Spooky Tree - Written and illustrated by James Kochalka, Johnny Boo stories are a favorite in my house. The series features a ghost named Johnny Boo and his pet ghost Squiggle. The two interact with a colorful cast of characters and this book is the first chapter in an upcoming spooky story that I hope involves the Ice Cream Monster. I preordered three bundles of this book to pass out to trick-or-treaters and it already has rave reviews from my children.





Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight - Based in the monstrous world created by R.L. Stine, this comic is penned by Jenny Lambert and illustrated by Chris Fenoglio.  One of the highlights each Halloween season is reading spooky stories and Goosebumps is synonymous with age appropriate horror. This full-size comic features a pair of children who find themselves in an upside down world after exploring a local library. It appears to feature Slappy the Dummy and that is more than enough reason to pick this title up.

Ms. Marvel #1 - If you haven't checked out this series from G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona now is the perfect time to get the debut issue for free! This story introduces some much needed diversity into the world of mainstream comics and Kamala Khan is a welcome change to the typical superhero. Find out why it is exciting to have Marvel's first Muslim character with her own book!






Jughead: The Hunger - Geared towards older readers, this spooky book is set in the Riverdale universe. It has been oddly satisfying to watch Archie re-brand itself as Riverdale geared towards teenagers. While I have not gone down that rabbit hole, I am very intrigued to read a book featuring Jughead as a werewolf and Betty as a werewolf hunter. From talking to friends who have enjoyed this reboot it sounds like this title doesn't take itself too seriously and has its tongue firmly planted in its cheek.

Over the Garden Wall and Into the Unknown - It has been delightful to see this quirky cartoon get an extended life in the form of a comic book. While the brothers Wirt and Greg have returned home from The Unknown, someone else has accompanied them on their journey.  Now they need to find a way to get their friend back to the Unknown.  Flipping the script and allowing for a stranger to interact in our world should be an interesting twist that is recommended to readers of all ages.





Check out the entire library of comics that might be given away at your local comic book store by clicking here.  Make sure you keep in mind that some stores may not have all of the titles and some may give away more comics than others. The idea is to have fun and pick up at least one free book. Thursday Morning Superhero - Halloween ComicFest Edition

This Saturday marks the sixth annual Halloween ComicFest presented by Netflix and Stranger Things.  Halloween ComicFest celebrates our love for comics and our love for our local comic book shops. Participating stores give away free comics to fans, the website hosts a costume contest, and many local stores offer a lot of additional promotions and giveaways. You can even pick up bagged sets of 25 mini comics to pass out at your house on Halloween. It really is a great excuse to put on a costume, visit your local comic book store, and get some free books.  Here are my top five picks for Halloween ComicFest. HCF Babyteeth #1 - Rated for mature readers, I am thrilled that this title from Donny Cates will be offered up to age appropriate readers on Saturday.  Babyteeth focuses on the life of Sadie Ritter, a sixteen year old who is pregnant with what might be the Antichrist. Needless to say this makes being a teen mother a bit more complicated and takes her life in a direction she could have never expected.  If you haven't checked this series out yet, please pick it up this weekend and you won't be disappointed.





HCF Ghostbusters Dia De Los Muertos - How can you enjoy Halloween without some ghost busting? This books takes place on the Day of the Dead just following Halloween. While I haven't read a lot of this IDW series, I have heard good things and plan on picking this up on Saturday. Featuring a diverse cast of Ghostbusters, the crew is dealing with a ghost that is causing some problems for a family in New York. Rated for teen readers.

HCF 2017 Runaways #1 - Brian K. Vaughan, of Saga and Y: The Last Man fame, is penning a new Runaways series for Marvel that is sure not to let you down. The story centers around six children who are on the run from their parents. It turns out their parents are part of a secret criminal societey known as the Pride. I am very curious to read Vaughan's take on this classic Marvel series. Rated for team readers.






HCF 2017 Donald Duck Halloween Scream #2 Mini Comic Polypack - In addition to the free books that you can pick up, you can purchase polybag packs of 25 comics to hand out to trick-or-treaters. My top pick for the bagged mini comics is this book featuring Donald Duck. You can't go wrong with a classic Disney character and fits in well with the timing of the Ducktales reboot. You had me on Donald Duck meeting his match in a haunted house. Rated for readers of all ages.

HCF 2017 Archie's Madhouse Mini Comic Polypack - Archie is back in a big way and his annual Halloween min comic is always a delight. Featuring a collection of spooky stories, this title should be a lot of fan for readers both young and old. Given the success of the Riverdale television show, it should also be a hit for those tricky in between readers!  Rated for readers of all ages.

Thursday Morning Superhero: Halloween Comic Fest Edition

Halloween is next Monday and it can only mean one thing.  Candy!!  Well, that and free comic books!  This Saturday is Halloween Comic Fest and participating comic book stores will be holding costume contests, passing out free mini comics, and some will even have mini comic packs you can purchase to hand out on Halloween.  Handing out comics has become a tradition in my house and I look forward to it every year.  To find a participating location try the store finder here.  Per usual when Halloween Comic Fest rolls around, I am forgoing my normal comic book wrap-up and will highlight some of the great titles you can get for free this weekend.   Just know that Saga remains a must purchase and it would have likely been my pick of the week.

Johnny Boo and the Pumpkin Tiger - We love James Kolchaka in our household and Johnny Boo has been a staple in my kids' lives for the past 7 years!  I am so happy that we get a new Johnny Boo story just in time for Halloween.  Johnny Boo is the coolest ghost in town and goes on wacky adventures with his pet ghost Squiggle.  This title will be fun for the whole family.  Some stores will be selling this in packs of 25 and it is a great title to hand out on Halloween.





Grumpy Cat and Pokey - Grumpy Cat and her brother Pokey have different attitudes when it comes to Halloween.  Pokey is quite excited, but it comes as no surprise that Grumpy isn't too excited about the upcoming holiday.  Having read a few of the Grumpy Cat comics before, you know that you will get hit with a heavy dose of sarcasm and cuteness, in another great all-ages title.  This is one you should be proud to hand out to trick-or-treaters!

Pokemon Pocket Comics XY - While not really keeping in the spirit of the holiday, it is hard to have a more timely comic than this one.  I can only imagine that trick-or-treaters will be trying to catch a Ghastly or two and other spooky Pokemon on Pokemon Go as they trek across the neighborhood collecting actual candy and transferring caught Pokemon into virtual candy.  Imagine how excited they will be to see this title hit their plastic bucket or pillowcase on Halloween night.  You will have the coolest house on the block!





Archie's Madhouse - We all get trick-or-treaters that are a bit too old to be going from house to house collecting candy.  For a reference point see the amazing Freaks and Geeks Halloween episode.  One of the best.  Anyhoo, Archie is a classic and one that will be appropriate to hand out to the older kids who ring your doorbell.  Archie has seen a resurgence as of late and this title collects a variety of stories that are sure to entertain.

Thursday Morning Superhero: Halloween ComicFest Edition

It is hard to believe that we are only 2 days away from Halloween and the fourth annual Halloween ComicFest!  I hope you are as excited as I am for this event that is filled with tricks and treats.  For the fourth straight year, comic book shops around the world will be handing out free comic books to fans.  In addition, you can participate in the greatest Halloween contest ever by clicking here and find a participating store by clicking here.  In what is becoming an annual tradition at Nerds of a Feather, I present to you my top five comics of Halloween ComicFest.

1. Boom Halloween Haunt - Featuring stories from Lumberjanes, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe, this is one book that will appeal to a wide variety of fans of all ages.  Lumberjanes is a phenomenal series well worth your time and I hear those other two titles have a few fans.

2. Stan Lee's Chakra The Invincible Halloween Special - Stan Lee's kids adventure that launched on Free Comic Book Day and is a featured animated short on Angry Birds ToonsTV, Chackra the Invincible has a Halloween special that is sure to delight your youngest comic book fan.  I love that Stan Lee is making all ages books to bring in a new generation of comic book fans.

3. Grimm Tales of Terror: Web of Deceit - From Zenescope, we are treated to a reprint of Grimm Tales of Terror #2, a classic horror tale in the style of Tales from the Crypt and Creedshow.  Definitely not an all-ages book, but a grizzley tale for the older readers that features a group of treasure hunters on the lookout for the priceless Spider King relic.

4. Birth of Kitaro - I don't know much about this series, but it is from the golden era of comics and is the origin story of Kitaro, a character created by Shigeru Mizuki.  It is an all-ages supernatural series that includes stories about Japanese ghosts and monsters.  Sounds very cool.

5. Batman Adventures #1 Special Edition - It is hard to make a list like this without a Batman comic.  This year we are treated to a reprint of the first issue of the comic book that was a spin-off of Batman: The Animated Series.  In this issue, Batman must square off against both the Joker and Penguin.  Another great all-ages book that adults will enjoy as much as kids.

Thursday Morning Superhero

Halloween isn't too far away and it is time to think about what you are handing out to trick-or-treaters on Halloween.  You could be boring and hand out candy, or you could rule your neighborhood and hand out mini comics.  You can find a participating store here, and place your order for 25 packs of the mini-comics that will spread the love of comics.  My family has done this for the past few years and it has been a huge success. 

 Pick of the Week:

Captain America: White #3 -  Dear Marvel.  Please give Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale an ongoing series in which they regale us with tales of Captain America during World War II.  I have been a good boy this year and feel that I should be rewarded with Captain America taking down Nazis, frustrating General Fury, and trying to impose his moral values on the world in his quest to stop Hitler.  Given this issue, we are going to be graced with the presence of Red Skull in the issue #4 and I would love to revisit Baron Zemo, Dr. Faustus, Master Man, and Armin Zola.  If you can make this happen I will be forever in your debt.  Sincerely, Mikey.  

The Rest:

Captain America #1 -  This is quite the transition from Captain America: White, but with Nick Spencer at the helm I know I am in for a treat.  Sam Wilson finds himself in an odd situation.  He was granted freedom from S.H.I.E.L.D. and the U.S. Government, but things aren't going as planned.  The political divide in this country has created a strong resistance to what he stands for.  Spencer does an effective job shifting gears from an external threat to an internal one and I love the uphill battle that Wilson is facing as he attempts to regain the confidence of the American people.  I have high hopes for this one.


The Walking Dead #147 - While this current arc has been slow on zombies, it has been high on drama.  You know things are hitting a boiling point at your home when people want to use a child as bait against her own mother.  Rick finds himself and knows that he needs to get Lydia to safety.  Despite this drama, this issue shines in the exchange between Michonne and Rick.   Michonne is still mourning the death of Ezekiel and has an emotional discussion with Rick, who has suffered endlessly throughout this series.  Moments like this will bring me back to this series as it approaches the 150 issue milestone. 



Batman #45 - Bloom continues to be one of the best Batman villains ever to grace the page of a comic.  He has caused quite the stir in Gotham, and the Jim Gordan Batman is at his wits end.  After causing a scene, he appears to be on the out as Batman, and we may actually see Bruce dawn the suit.  While I like that things remain mixed up, I am yearning for a return of the Batman that is in my comfort zone.

Thursday Morning Superhero: Halloween ComicFest Edition

This Saturday marks the third annual Halloween ComicFest.  While it has only been around since 2012, Halloween ComicFest has grown each year and has quickly become an annual tradition for many families.  This will be the second year that our household ordered packs of the mini-comics to pass out to trick-or-treaters.  The books were a massive success last year.

Find out if your LCS is participating by checking out the link here and make sure to dress up in your best costume as many comic book stores have additional events and contests associated with Halloween ComicFest.  If they don't have a costume contest, snap a picture of yourself holding one of the ComicFest comics and submit it to "The Greatest Halloween Costume Contest Ever" here.  In addition to a lot of great prizes, you could take home a gift certificate to your LCS worth either $500 or $1,000!

There are 19 total comics that will be distributed on Saturday, and instead of my usual pick of the week I am going to breakdown my top selections for this weekend.  Keep in mind that each store has its own distribution policies on the comic books.  They purchase the comics at cost to provide to you for free.  Make sure you say thanks!

Pick of Halloween ComicFest:
Scooby-Doo Team Up: HCF Edition #1 - I still have fond memories of the Scooby-Doo and Batman crossover from my youth and am excited to read this all-ages comic book with my kids.  Batman and the gang team up to uncover the mystery of a giant Man-Bat that has been causing trouble.  Sounds like loads of fun for the whole family to enjoy.

The Rest:
Afterlife with Archie #1 - Recommended for teen readers and older, this is a story that involves Archie and his pals are taken to the grave and back in what is dubbed the Arch-pocalypse.  Nice palette cleanser the other zombie comics on the market and very appropriate considering the recent demise of Archie.  Featuring Sabrina the teenage witch and zombies, this classic reprint is not to be missed.







Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween Special Edition #1 - Relive the first chapter in Jeph Loeb's classic Batman: Haunted Knight, in this special reprint.  Set on Halloween, this tale features an all-star cast of villains and is a must read for any Batman fan.  And to be completely honest, while I say I am doing this for my kids, I just want more comics for myself!

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic HCF Edition #1 - I am not a brony.  I'm not!  Nothing wrong with enjoying good stories with my daughter.  Seriously though, the creative team behind the new ponies do a great job writing entertaining stories with very relatable characters.  My son pretends not to enjoy them as much as his sister, but he is a fan.  Halloween ComicFest really has something for everyone and is a great excuse to put on your best MLP costume, go to your LCS and have fun reading about ponies.

Halloween ComicFest

The second annual Halloween ComicFest is almost here!  This Saturday marks the return of one of my favorite events at my LCS last year.  What is not to like about free mini-comics, candy, costumes, and fun.  To find a participating store in your area click here.  You can also enter the costume contest here (you will need to pick up an Itty Bitty Hellboy button from a participating store) and be entered to win some really great prizes.  For the first time I ordered bundles of the mini-comics to hand out at my house on Halloween and couldn't be more excited.

Top 5 Comics:

1. Batman: The Long Halloween Special Edition - A classic Batman tale from Jeph Loeb, this comic collects the first chapter of a great holiday themed mystery.  Can't wait to start reading this again!

2. Pantalones, TX: Zombinata - From Archaia, this all ages comic takes place in the town of Pantalones, TX.  It is Halloween and pinatas that are fed candy are coming back to life.  Sounds like a fun enemy to battle and I can't wait to read this with my kids.

3. Cartoon Network Super Sampler - What is not to like when you have a comic that features the Power Puff Girls, Samurai Jack, and Ben 10?  Sounds like a comic that, not only with both of my kids enjoy, but I will as well.

4. Batman Li'l Gotham: Special Edition - When you read a preview of a title and it includes a story in which Robin learns the true meaning of Halloween then you know it is a must have.  Add in a Thanksgiving story and I don't know if it gets any better.

5. My Little Pony: Halloween Edition - While I would have preferred a Halloween story, this collection is sure to impress casual fans and bronies alike.  This mini-comic collects highlights from the previous year, pony art, and some surprises.

Halloween ComicFest

If this time of year wasn't good enough, with the candy, the jack-o-lanterns, corn mazes, and The Great Pumpkin, we now have Halloween ComicFest!  Diamond Comic Distributors and the good folks behind the Comic Shop Locator Service teamed with multiple publishers to bring us Halloween ComicFest.  So in addition to dressing up in costume, getting and giving candy, and scaring resident children, we now get free comics. 

On top of that they are hosting the Greatest Costume Contest ever and are giving away over 500 prizes in an online costume contest on their website.  Visit www.halloweencomicfest.com to find a participating store near you and to vote for me as Axe Cop in the Indy category!

Once you find a participating store in your area here are some of the free books that you can get your hands on.  There are four full-size comics and 11 mini-comics for you to try to get a hold of.  My five-year old son is most excited about Cow Boy, Johnny Boo, and Axe Cop.  With a great selection of comics for all ages, this is one event I hope becomes an annual tradition.
