6 Books with A.K. Mulford

A.K. Mulford is a bestselling fantasy author and former wildlife biologist who swapped rehabilitating monkeys for writing novels. She/They are inspired to create diverse stories that transport readers to new realms, making them fall in love with fantasy for the first time, or, all over again. She now lives in New Zealand with her husband and two young human primates, creating lovable fantasy characters and making ridiculous TikToks (@akmulfordauthor).

Today she tells us about her Six Books:

1. What book are you currently reading?

I’m currently listening to the audiobook of Bindle Punk Bruja by Desideria Mesa. This book is keeping me company during my international move and it’s been nice to escape into a rich and vibrant world during all of the moving chaos.

2. What upcoming book are you really excited about?

A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. Her world-building is fantastic and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into another one of her books.

3. Is there a book you’re currently itching to re-read?

Is it too soon to be thinking about Christmas? I have a tradition of rereading a few of my favorite classics over the holidays. I always pick at least one book from Jane Austen and J.R.R. Tolkien, neither of which are particularly Christmas-y but it always makes me think of the holidays anyway. (I guess it’s no surprise that I’ve gone on to write romantic fantasy.)

4  A book that you love and wish that you yourself had written.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. The descriptions in that book are so delicious and immersive, and I found myself savoring every page.

5. What’s one book, which you read as a child or a young adult, that has had a lasting influence on your writing?

I know it’s a terrible cliche for a fantasy author, but reading The Hobbit was a big moment in my childhood. I had stacks of notebooks filled with verb conjugation dictionaries of my made up languages and hand drawn maps of worlds I wanted to write about. It really expanded my writing in a big way and made me fall in love with high fantasy.

6. And speaking of that, what’s your latest book, and why is it awesome?

The Rogue Crown is a sapphic, swashbuckling high fantasy following Bri as she struggles to uncover a murder plot and protect a stubborn (and gorgeous) princess. The Rogue Crown brings all of Bri’s snark and antics that reader’s have come to know and love, but also gives a look deeper into who she is and the old wounds that she tries to hide. Filled with powerful witches, steamy passions, and a court full of secrets, I hope this story is as fun to read as it was to write.

Thank you, A.K.!
