Pick of the Week:
Paper Girls #7 - Erin and her crew are still trapped in 2016 and are trying to find KJ. KJ appears to have been possessed by the aliens, or was an alien all along, and is trying to appease some being in the sky who brought along some other creatures. There is something incredibly empowering to see a comic led by a group of strong young women who are inspired traveling forward in time to see that a woman is running for president. This book is a throwback to great films like the Lost Boys, Goonies, and other classic 80's flicks, but with time travel, strong female leads, and mysterious aliens that have yet to reveal their true purpose. Brian K. Vaughan creates such amazing worlds and has once again done it through the eyes of a group of newspaper delivery girls. Even the letters section is a treat to read and makes me yearn for a simpler time. I will admit that I felt a bit ashamed reading this book in its digital format as Rita Pearl the Papergirl called out people for staring at glowing screens in response to a letter. I will do better next time Rita.
The Walking Dead #156 - Oh Negan. You never cease to amaze and surprise me. I must hand it to Robert Kirkman for making me appreciate Negan for protecting someone when nobody else would. Negan, who has done vile things, was actually pretty endearing for this issue. He is attempting to assimilate with the Whisperers, the tribe who wears zombie skins and poses the biggest threat to Rick and company. It was someone humbling to see Negan work his way into the group and to attempt to be accepted as one of them. Negan making references to erections and little Negan didn't help, but he gave it the old college try and it may not bode well for Rick for Negan to gain influence with his biggest rival. Kirkman is the king of ending each issue with a twist, and I didn't see this one coming from a mile away and have no idea what the implications will be. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next issue. Well played sir.
Batman #2 - Rebirth continues and this time it appears that Bruce Wayne might be prepping two new superheroes to take over when he has to retire from fighting crime. Gotham and Gotham girl are Superman-esque superheroes who have appeared in Gotham and helped out in other Rebirth titles that I haven't read. There is the threat of the "monster men" coming to Gotham and all we are teased with is that it might have to do with Professor Hugo Strange. Slow start to the series, but I am still willing to see the first arc through and see where Tom King takes the caped crusader. I will add that David Finch, Matt Banning, Danny Miki, Jordie Bellaire, and John Workman are crushing the art and have done a nice job evolving the series after the work of the great Greg Capullo.
