And as it happens, it's not as random as you might think--cola is used in China to caramelize soy-flavored chicken wings (in neighboring Korea it's often used as a "secret" ingredient in kalbi marinades). I haven't actually tried this snack, but was told it's "like barbeque flavor but with this sickly sweet, chemical aftertaste." Epic win for globalization.
